Ten years before, Venezuela, a petrostate under the presidency of Hugo Chavez, witnessed a decline in oil prices. As of 2017, the price for a barrel plunged to cheap OSRS gold just $50 from a peak that was more than $100 and in the same year, the U.S. instituted wide-ranging sanctions against the country's authoritarian regime.
"When oil prices began to decline it was impossible to find funds to import goods," said Alejandro Velasco who is a faculty member of New York University who specializes in Venezuelan politics, in an interview on the phone. "As consequently the country was left with no funds for the country's economy."
The Venezuelan coffers were already empty after the country spent its most recent oil wealth on social services such as subsidized healthcare, food, or literacy education programs. Chavez also removed perceived dissidents from the oil industry following an attempted coup by the military, altering production.
The widespread corruption within the administration further damaged the economy, as per Paul Angelo, a fellow at the Council for Foreign Relations who has a specialization on Latin American politics.
