He continues: "We like to say that if RuneScape is the MMO that is enjoyable while watching television, Melvor is the idle game you can play when playing OSRS Gold. Melvor Idle takes RuneScape's primary gameplay mechanics and condenses them down into bite-sized moments which can be enjoyed even when you're short on time, so RuneScape gamers will be right at home within Melvor. The Gower brothers organically grew communities over the course of time, but they also made mistakes , but they also made enormous leaps in the right direction, due to the state of the industry at the time allowed it. Things like RuneScape could not be made today.
RuneScape was a passion project created by three brothers who were in their parent's kitchen. They created it with free software from gaming mags. It was monetized so they could be able to justify working on it full-time, but with it being totally free to play at the same time.
From this kitchen and the kitchen sink, the brothers finally got their first office. They were still building their own desks and computers while they were interviewing prospective employees. It's a fascinating story we like to think could be true across the entire industry.
Enter New World. This latest MMO is managed by Amazon which is a company that has terrible violations of rights of its workers and an unjustly rich CEO. It's currently costing $40 to begin playing and then microtransactions are added over that. Arguably, RuneScape is the one that popularized the live game model prior to the time that the biggest players took to it, but all of its clones have tried to rewrite the concept.
"It really wasn't earning any revenue, but we'd invested so much effort to this point, and there were a lot of people enjoying the games," said Andrew Gower in one of the book's many interviews. "It was thrilling seeing 2,000-3,000 gamers enjoying the game all at once, and a lot of people chatting on the forums and enjoying RuneScape. I just wanted to keep making it. It was fun, even if it didn't make a profit".
This is the reason we decided to let the free membership levels be left in place - they didn't want to turn off their members. And as we know, it absolutely worked, its popularity only increased. Yet as The First 20 Years explains, RuneScape didn't reach its top levels without some mistakes made throughout the course.
Even those of us who played it regularly in the early 2000s could have a difficult time with the very first version that is now called RuneScape Classic. Players were able to attack anyone and even against each other RS Gold. The graphics were far from basic. The game could only hold 1,200 people without breaking.
