Does the Mini Hexagon Solar Mosquito Killer Lights' bug zapper work?
Clearly, the exterminator works. Just ask anyone who spends time around a bug zapper at night, as every insect killed makes its signature noise. A better question, however, is whether exterminators are effective at killing the most annoying bugs.
Unfortunately, many biting bugs are not attracted to the UV rays emitted by bug zappers, mosquitoes, and gnats. Conventional bug zappers kill large numbers of harmless insects. In fact, they may even kill more beneficial insects than harmful ones.
Mosquitoes in particular are attracted to carbon dioxide (in your breath) and water vapour (in your sweat), not the ultraviolet rays emitted by mosquito killers. However, there are now insecticides that emit UV light and carbon dioxide.
A final consideration is keeping the exterminator away from any areas where humans congregate for extended periods of time or any food preparation areas. Electrocuted bugs turn into fog, which may contain some dead insects, up to 7 feet away from the exterminator. The mist can be contaminated with bacteria that feed on dead insects, which can then be inhaled or deposited on humans or other animals.
While an exterminator is not a completely effective method of controlling harmful biting insects, another option is to keep the bugs away entirely. Yellow bug lights can be used to illuminate patios and decks. Since the yellow coating filters out the blue spectrum light that attracts many flying insects, far fewer insects will appear.
