When it comes to current games based on One Piece, there isn't much room on the Thousand Sunny pirate ship for neophytes. One Piece: Burning Blood reshapes one of the series' most important arcs into a 3D fighting game that'll confuse anyone outside of its fanbase. But as someone heavily invested in the pirate lifestyle of the long-running manga and anime series, I’m impressed with how just dense the crew is on this voyage, even as I wished for better combat and a broader story in Luffy's newest brawler.
The game begins in a pirate bar with a row of choices across the bottom, most of which are inaccessible. The one place to go is "Paramount War." This is story mode, and the first episode is "Episode: Luffy." Once chosen, the player is treated to a long cutscene where Luffy's adopted brother Ace is scheduled for execution by the Navy Marines, and Luffy (as well as many others) have shown up at Marineford to save him. So many powerful forces have gathered here, in fact, that it turns into a titanic battle. Several pirate factions have allied temporarily to fight the marines, all of them coming to fight under Whitebeard's command.
The combat of Burning Blood is entirely hit-or-miss, but unfortunately misses on the majority of occasions. In rare moments, combat can be dramatic, fast-flowing and exciting, while most of the time, it is slow, laggy and prone to abuse by spamming AI. The visual animations of attacks are magnificent but each character varies greatly in terms of style and elemental power, much to the game’s detriment. Fighters can have an elemental power, referred to in-game as Logia, ranging from magma, to ice, to gas. Others are able to attain the quality of beasts, referred to as Zoan, allowing them to take flight and so on. It’s because of this that combat, more often than not, feels grossly unbalanced, with some fighters having an automatic upper hand over their opponents from the offset, purely because of their elemental standings.
Burning Blood may lack carefully measured hitboxes, but that chaos is the draw of One Piece. None of the hits I took felt unfair to the point of frustration, even if with unbalanced gameplay. One Piece is at its most enjoyable when folks (whether online or in person) toss away any tactical restraint and treat fights like a reckless party game they are.
One Piece: Burning Blood is enjoyable even for those unfamiliar with the anime, but the game is at its best for those who already have some knowledge of the story's events. Some of the fights are brutal, making it increasingly difficult to progress the story, especially if the player isn't proficient at fighters and making combos. There are also some balancing issues that can make fights more difficult than they should be. Outside of the campaign, other modes add a nice variety of gameplay, and players can fight alone or with a friend both locally and online. Overall, this is a fun title but is not a completion for the faint at heart.
