What Sensors Do Solar Floodlights Use

  • An important aspect of solar floodlights is the solar panel as it collects solar energy, converts it into electricity, and stores that energy in batteries. When it becomes dusk or the sky gets very dark, it gives the lights the energy they need to turn on. There are three things to look out for with solar panels - type, wattage, and size.

Sensors play an integral role in solar lighting products as they help save battery and turn on lights when needed. Two important sensors are motion sensors and photosensors. what are they doing?

    motion sensor

As the name suggests, the light turns on when the sensor detects motion around an area. There are three typical types of motion detectors - active sensors, passive infrared sensors, and combination sensors. PIR sensors are typically fabricated in motion-activated sunlight and do not capture random motion such as wind-blowing objects or tree branches.

    photoelectric sensor

A discreet feature of solar floodlights is a photo sensor (or dusk-to-dawn sensor). The sensor detects when the light is dimming, darkness is imminent, and automatically turns on the lights when a set darkness level is reached. When morning comes, the lights turn off, saving energy and battery. If the solar floodlight does not have this sensor, the light must be turned on and off automatically. You must do your homework and read the instructions when looking for a solar floodlight with this sensor. If the manufacturer claims it's a dusk-to-dawn light, you can rest assured that it has a photosensor.
