One thing Platinum won't have is updated graphics WOTLK Gold. Instead, the biggest focus of the game is battle.net support. Blizzard's Susan Wooley says, "The main reason we decided to release WOTLK Classic Platinum is because we wanted to offer WOTLK Classic over battle.net. It's not our intention to do a full-blown expansion set or a new version of the game. We basically wanted to create a Win95 version of the game that could be playable over the internet. But we wanted to give our customers more value than just internet play. We wanted to give them whole new campaigns. We're not only reviving the multiplayer, we're reviving the single player as well. But we are too busy working on other projects to redo the entire game. We wanted to move forward."
Owners of WOTLK Classic Platinum will be able to play WOTLK Classic games over battle.net, with full ladder and tournament support. The WOTLK Classic will be a native Windows 95 application, a necessary move since battle.net won't work with the DOS version of WOTLK Classic.
Blizzard is setting WOTLK Classic Platinum's price point at approximately US$35, but will offer owners of the original WOTLK Classic or Battlechest a rebate of up to $20. The exact pricing model is still being determined. While creative director Ben Thompson ultimately supports Blitzchung's right to free speech, the WOTLK Classic developer felt a professional tournament wasn't the place to express those views.
“Of course I celebrate--as we all do to some extent or another--free speech. You should be able to say what it is you want to say," Thompson said. "I also understand what [Blizzard president] J. Allen Brack himself addressed in his own internal communications and later on to the world at large, which is that being able to speak your mind and say how you feel from a personal level is always and should always be a welcome thing. Doing so from a platform very much not your own and done from a voice not your own to take control, so to buy WOW WOTLK Classic Gold speak, or on behalf of another is not free speech. That is on behalf of something that’s not yours to do with.”
